THE YEAR 1988: PARIS

I was working during the night as waiter near the “Center Pompidou” Two students from the University of Sorbonne joined me in an apartment of 90m2 , situated in “Rue de la Ferronnerie” After some investigation into the market , I decided to start working with an established photo-business. I made an agreement with Mr. Caillot of the “Studio de Paris” I took responsibility for the printing of the brochures and Mr. Caillot was distributing them to his (potential) clients. After a couple of weeks the wedding business started to pick up but it was not bringing in the money I was hoping for. Soon I discovered the American and Japanese tourists. I parked La Reina Negra at the famous avenue Champs Elysées or nearby "The Certre Pompidou” . I left a note on the car saying : “Discover Paris by Classic Car” tel …………

I was doing well but I didn´t want to legalise the business yet. Sometimes I was stopped by the police . Instead of asking for my work permit , they wanted me to show the engine to them!! One day , I even received from a police-officer a visiting card of the mayor of Paris , Jacques Chirac ! The police fined me once for wrong parking ; they wrote Renault on the fine (…..) I am sorry but than I cannot pay ….besides La Reina Negra was driving with a Dutch number on a French licence plate ! It was not noticed that I was doing business with a Dutch car in Paris .

La Reina Negra also functioned as a taxi at Charles de Gaulle Airport. I saw surprised faces when I arrived at the airport . Amazingly nobody said anything except the passengers of course…..A story : Almost inmediately there was a knock on my back door . It was a solicitor from London. He was in a hurry and needed transport to the centre as quickly as possible ! He did not need to ask me twice…..Before he knew it we were driving in second gear at 80 km/h !! The solicitor was getting worried when he discovered the lack of a taxi-meter. I reacted right away : “Sorry Sir the meter broke down but don´t worry this car is already driving for more than 30 years for the same company (….) I never ripped off the people and I charged the same tariff like anywere else. After a while I decided to stop because it was getting too risky.

In 1988 , family and friends came to visit me in Paris. Everybody enjoyed a sight seeing tour in La Reina Negra. I have good memories of the girls from the disco. Especially on a Sunday morning after a good night of dancing… With mummy enjoying a croissant on the avenue C. E. or the spontaneous visit of the family van Buuren. The Sacre Coeur was definitely a must during the tour of Paris.
